Department Recovers More Than $600,000 for D.C. Residents
As the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking nears the end of its fiscal year, it has recovered $624,000 for people short-changed by their insurance companies.
“Announcing these figures is one of my more pleasurable duties,” said William P. White, the department’s commissioner. “It’s always nice when we can make things right for the people we serve.”
The department typically recovers closer to half a million dollars for consumers as the fiscal year end nears on Sept. 30. But there were several large settlements this year.
The department closed 750 complaints during the period from Oct. 1 to Sept. 8. Sixty percent were complaints about health-care reimbursements; 13 percent were auto insurance and 10 percent complaints about life insurance.
