WASHINGTON — A person briefed on the conversation says D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown has told colleagues that he plans to resign after being charged with bank fraud.

The person says Brown revealed his plans Wednesday in a closed-door meeting of members of the D.C. Council.

The person requested anonymity because Brown has not publicly announced his decision and because the person was not authorized to discuss the meeting.

Brown told reporters after the meeting that he would issue a statement Thursday but otherwise declined comment.

Brown was charged earlier in the day with overstating his income on loan applications. He was charged in a criminal information, a document that generally signals a defendant plans to plead guilty.
