Sekou Biddle Takes Seat Vacated by Councilmember Kwame Brown

The District Council is back to its full 13 members with the recent addition of Sekou Biddle, who will take the seat vacated by At-Large Councilmember Kwame Brown who was elected Council Chair last November. Biddle has served as Executive Director of Jump Start for Young Children, a nonprofit organization that focuses on preparing children for elementary school, and is a member of the Board of Education. He describes himself as a “Progressive Democrat.” On the third round of often contentious voting, Biddle was selected by the DC Democratic State Committee to fill the At-Large seat. A number of current councilmembers, including the Chair, reportedly backed the 39-year old Ward 4 resident over former Ward 5 Councilmember Vincent Orange.

Biddle serves in an interim capacity and will face a number of challengers, including Orange, in an April 26th Special Election for the seat.
